5 interesting things to see near Holborn

Holborn is a great place to stay or to visit while in London, as it is right on the doorstep of many fantastic local sights and attractions. In this brief guide, we'll take a look at five of the most interesting things to look out for in this area...

British Museum

During your stay at the Montcalm Royal London City Hotel, it would be a shame not to stop by Holborn's own British Museum. As one of the city's foremost venues of its kind, the museum houses a wide array of artefacts from all over the world, and represents the pinnacle of London museum culture.

It’s not only the world's oldest public museum (founded in 1753) but has also become London's most popular tourist attraction, a title which the British Museum has held for over a decade. Expect floor upon floor of treasures spanning much of human history, with around 7 million objects to see up close.

Sir John Soane's Museum

A historic house close to Holborn, Sir John Soane's Museum is filled with fascinating antiquities as well as being the personal collection of the home's former resident. Soane asked that his home remained untouched after his death, and this promise has been kept for over 180 years. The house regularly hosts talks and exhibitions perfect for all the family staying with us at hotels near Old Street Station.

Lincoln's Inn Fields

There are plentiful green spaces throughout London, and Lincoln's Inn Fields is one of the largest, situated within easy reach of the Montcalm Royal London City Hotel. The venue was first developed during the 17th century, before opening to the public in 1895. Lincoln's Inn Fields is thought to have served as the inspiration for New York's Central Park, and provides the ideal space to relax with a picnic during your visit.

London Transport Museum

Holborn is home to many museums, and the London Transport Museum is another of the best ones to explore while staying nearby. London's transport system is world-famous for its complexity and effectiveness, and here you can see some of the earlier vehicles which helped the city keep running, as well as exploring iconic sights such as a London bus and train carriages. Children will find it particularly fascinating while staying at hotels near Old Street Station.

Old Bailey

The Old Bailey is perhaps the most famous criminal court anywhere in the world, and it is also situated in Holborn. This space has been the centre of London's justice system for hundreds of years, and it remains a working court to this day. While most of the building is not open to the public, it is an impressive space just to see from the outside – and there are viewings available for select groups throughout the year. For larger groups, booking in advance is advised as there is only limited space available. In addition, only visitors over the age of 14 can gain access to these viewings.
