An afternoon browsing Old Spitalfields Market

Old Spitalfields Market is one of London’s most popular marketplaces, filled with vibrancy and lots to see and do. This quick guide should help you wile away a leisurely afternoon browsing all the market has to offer, as well as demonstrating some of the greatest finds you might encounter while you’re there…

Guide to Old Spitalfields Market

During your stay at the Montcalm Royal London House spa and hotel, you’re sure to want to make a little time for a relaxed browse around the area’s top venues. The market itself dates all the way back to 1638 and the reign of King Charles. In the intervening centuries, the area has grown and developed into a decidedly hip place to eat and shop, centred in thriving East London. With a backdrop of everything from independent boutiques to stalls selling vintage clothing and stunning antiques, the market is open seven days a week and merits afternoon browsing at the weekend when it’s in full swing. Getting there is easy thanks to London’s great transport links; simply hop off the train at Liverpool Street Station and walk for around five minutes and you’ll be there in no time at all while you stay at the Montcalm Royal London House.

What’s On at Old Spitalfields

The market is busiest between Thursday and Sunday, with a packed roster of events. On Thursday, the antique market takes centre stage, offering collectables and retro finds. Fridays focus on clothing and art while Saturday’s each have a different theme. Sunday is the peak of the market’s popularity with around 100 stalls weekly. Food trucks are on offer between Monday and Saturday, and serve up delicious finds sure to impress any dedicated foodie.

Food and Drink

Bedales offers an extensive library of wines from around the world, and Konditor & Cook specialise in delicious cakes and coffee for adding some fuel to your afternoon browse! All of their cakes are handmade each day, so you’re sure of only the freshest produce. With signature bakes including the award-winning Whiskey Bomb and the popular Curly Whirly Cake, this is the perfect place to try something new! There’s also an upscale French bistro in the form of La Chapelle, and Canteen serves up seasonal British food at affordable price points.

Top Tips for Visitors

While technically a closed market, there are areas of Old Spitalfields which are still open to the elements – so be sure to dress weather-appropriately and bring an umbrella if it looks like rain! Despite the market being extra busy at the weekend, there’s still much to recommend it if you visit earlier in the week, and the quieter pace may appeal to those seeking a more relaxed stroll around the venue.

To find out more and help you plan your own visit, head to the official Old Spitalfields Market website and discover all the major events happening during your stay.
