Things to do at Barbican Centre in June 2018

The Barbican is one of the most famous venues in London, lauded for its rich history of displaying art, film, dance and theatre. Most days are packed with showings of films and special exhibitions, and June is a particularly good month to pay a visit.

Whatever your preferred style of entertainment, there’s sure to be something for you. Even better, the centre is less than 10-minutes away from our hotels near Old Street Station, so you don’t have very far to go.

Bach Weekend with Sir John Eliot Gardiner

Running from 15th June to 17th June, the Bach Weekend is comprehensive celebration of the German composer. Curated by famed conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner, there will be a range of immensely talented classical musicians bringing the pieces of Bach to life. The famous Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloists will be on hand to perform a three-concert cycle of cantatas, all under the guiding hand of Sir John.

Most of the main concerts will be at the Barbican, with a few moving to different locations nearby, such as LSO St. Luke’s, which is still just three minutes from your Montcalm Luxury Hotel London. It promises to be a weekend of amazing music, performed by some of the most talented musicians in the world.

Vanessa Winship: And Time Folds

Opening on 22nd June, this exhibition is the first major UK solo show of lauded British photographer Vanessa Winship.

Winship focuses her lens on contemporary society and the world we live in, and her work is more poetic and artistic than it is documentary style. Vanessa Winship is held as one of the finest British photographers working today and this exhibition will be showing more than 150 of her works, many shown for the very first time in the UK.

It promises to be a great exhibition and the perfect place to sample some culture before heading back to your Montcalm Luxury Hotel London.

The Phantom of the Opera

No, this isn’t the Andrew Lloyd-Webber version, but instead is a showing of the classic Lon Chaney silent 1925 film version. But worry not, as there will be some noise to offset the rustling of sweets in the form of live electronic accompaniment.

Showing on June 17th, The Phantom of the Opera is considered by many to be the moodiest and most moving version of this oft-retold tale. Featuring silver screen legend Mary Philbin as Christine, this combination of classic cinema and live music promises to be a real treat for movie lovers. It’s a modern twist on the old silent cinema tradition and is a great way to spend your afternoon before heading back to our hotels near Old Street Station to make evening plans.

Inside Abbey Road Studios

Running until July 7th, this exhibition provides amazing insight into one of the most famous music studios in the world. Framed as a collaboration between Abbey Road and renowned rock photographer Jill Furmanovsky, Inside Abbey Road Studios offers an inside view of the studios.

There’s photographs, artefacts and paraphernalia galore as you move about the exhibition and it’s the perfect exhibition for music lovers.
