The Best Ways to Treat Mum this Mother’s Day

London is one of the greatest cities on earth, and the perfect place to celebrate Mother’s Day. Whether you’re on the lookout for original ways to treat your mum, or you simply need a little inspiration in anticipation of the event – here’s a few of our favourite ways to help make her feel extra-special.

Head for the West End

There are few places which can guarantee incredible entertainment quite like the West End. This area represents the true ‘hub’ of British theatre-land, and includes venues and productions which cater to every possible taste.

From the remarkable new releases to productions which have been running for decades, the West End offers drama, musicals and comedy all in one place. The theatres in this part of London are every bit as dramatic as the entertainment, and many of them have special historical significance.

While staying at 5 star hotels in London, we wholeheartedly recommend you find a show which your mum will love, and treat her to a dazzling night of theatre. If you’re feeling spontaneous, you can simply head along to your favourite venue and pay at the box office, but for the best chance of getting a seat (let alone the best seats) be sure to book online in advance.

Have a picnic in a London park

While London is inevitably more closely linked with industrialisation, it is also home to an array of incredible parks and green spaces. These range from small community-built parks and squares, to larger, sprawling Royal Parks which are now open to the general public.

Many of these spaces are ideal for a picnic, and as Mother’s Day falls on a delightful Spring day, if the weather looks suitable then this is a simple yet caring way to celebrate. Regent’s Park is one of the best places for a picnic, particularly if you’re willing to scale the heights of Primrose Hill. From here, you’ll have incredible views of the city, and can show off your local knowledge by pointing out key landmarks in the surrounding area.

To organise the perfect picnic, jot down any of your mum’s key foodie preferences, and then head to a top London department store to find something great. You could opt for pre-prepared sandwiches and cakes, or you might prefer to make something yourself using fresh seasonal ingredients. Key locations we recommend for finding your treats include historic grocer Fortnum & Mason (beloved by the Royal Family) and Harrod’s lavish food hall. At both of these venues you can also pick up a decorative, functional hamper which your mum will be able to treasure long after the picnic itself is over.

Take mum shopping

A shopping spree is often one of the most popular ways to celebrate, and if you are looking for fantastic retail opportunities then a trip to the best shopping districts in the city could be the perfect idea.

There are an abundance of locations where you can experience great shopping in the city, thanks to venues such as Oxford Street, which is arguably one of the most famous of all shopping streets. Here designer stores are nestled alongside high street finds, ensuring that there’s always something for every budget.

Alternatively, you can go straight for luxury by heading to glitzy Knightsbridge, or try something offbeat at areas such as Covent Garden or Carnaby Street. Ideally, find an area of London which has stores you know your mum will love, and plan your adventures around it. A bout of retail therapy is also the ideal accompaniment to spa packages in London.

Take her on a museum tour

Is your mum a bit of a culture vulture? Then perhaps a trip around some of the city’s top museums and art galleries would be the best way to spend the day. London is never short of cultural sites to explore, with more museums than you could possibly ever discover in one day!

It helps to prioritise which ones you’re particularly eager to share with your mum, something you can work out by thinking about her own priorities and interests. Is she an art fan, or a history buff? Perhaps she’s intensely interested in science or the natural world. London has stunning spaces which cater to all of these interests and more – ensuring that no matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find it.

Some of our favourite places to take mum this Mother’s Day include the National Gallery, the Tate, the V&A and the Natural History Museum.

Take a trip along the Thames

The River Thames is one of the most iconic sights in London, and also one of the most visited areas of the city. People use the Thames for all kinds of reasons, including getting from A to B. However, if you want to treat your mum, we wholeheartedly recommend booking her a luxurious cruise or river boat trip.

These adventures take a leisurely pace along the stretch of water, rather than the breakneck speed which some other Thames tours tend to be known for. You may even be able to enjoy a glass of bubbly or a meal while you travel, and see all the key sights while staying at Montcalm hotels.

Head for the Sky Garden

If your mum is bowled over by a great view, then a trip to the Sky Garden is sure to impress. This is London’s incredible garden space located high above the city. It includes a large viewing area with panoramic views, as well as three storeys of perfectly manicured gardens.

Dotted throughout the Sky Garden, you’ll find restaurants and other communal spaces built for socialising. If you’ve never been here before then it’ll be a treat for both of you – and we recommend bringing a camera!

Places at the Sky Garden need to be booked in advance due to high demand, so simply head to the official website and secure your space.
