Cool places you can ice skate outdoors in the city this winter

Winter sports don’t get much more festive than ice skating, and the great thing about London during this time of year is that there’re plenty of places that you can visit to give it a try!

From outdoor rinks filled with festive lights to purpose-built indoor ice skating, there's so many spots in London that offer some winter fun for the whole family.

So, get your skates on and check out our top picks for skating in the city this winter.

Winter Wonderland – Hyde Park

It doesn’t get more wintery than this! Hyde Park is throwing open its gates and welcoming a winter wonderland that features the UK’s largest outdoor ice rink. Specially extended for this year, take to the ice and see which of the members of your group show a flair for this fun winter sport.

There’s also plenty of other exciting events and things to do at Hyde Park’s Winter Wonderland, including a Bavarian Village for a yummy hot chocolate to warm those hands or regular spectacular ice shows performed by professional skaters.

To reach the Winter Wonderland at Hyde Park from the Montcalm Finsbury Square, take the Tube to Knightsbridge Station, and you'll be sailing along the ice in just thirty minutes.

Somerset House

Just for the festive period, Somerset House is transformed into the perfect winter setting with an outdoor ice skating rink that’s open during the day and at night. There’s also special musical skate evenings that the whole family will enjoy as well as a festive shopping arcade.

If your noses and fingertips could do with a little warming up, head back to the bar at our Montcalm Finsbury Square hotel for coffee with a view London.

Tower of London Ice Rink

For ice skating with a stunning view, the Tower of London ice rink features a large skating area with a fantastic tower backdrop.

Bathed in a pale blue light during the evening, this is the perfect winter activity for families as they have assigned skate sessions to ensure that the rink never becomes overcrowded.

For a coffee with a view London, the bar at our Montcalm Finsbury Square hotel is the perfect place to warm up after your skating session and to rest those tired legs.

Lea Valley Ice Centre

If you’re looking for a few lessons before you take to the ice in public, then the Lea Valley Ice Centre is the place to go! Here, you can book a session with a professional ice skating trainer at their purpose built indoor ice rink where you can learn all of the tips and techniques to improve your ice skating performance.

Once you’ve finished your lesson, it’s well worth hanging around and observing some of the more skilled skaters take to the ice during pair skating sessions while you warm up those frosty fingers and toes.
