Three Historical Sites to Visit in and near Finsbury Square

One of the very best things about exploring a city – especially one as large as London – is finding out all about its history. Every area of the capital has its tales to tell and past to reveal, and there’s plenty to check in and near Finsbury Square.

Staying at the Montcalm Hotel Shoreditch, you’re in the perfect position to explore some nearby history and gain greater insight into the area around you.

The Charterhouse

Only a brief walk from hotels near Finsbury Square, The Charterhouse is one of the oldest buildings in London and a fascinating place to visit.

Originally opened in 1348, The Charterhouse was created to serve as a monastery. But, over time, the site has seen multiple uses and all of that history is on display. Throughout the centuries, The Charterhouse has been a private residence, a boys-only school and an Almshouse – and it still fulfils that purpose today.

It’s a stunning place to visit, and the building itself is still in immaculate condition, despite centuries of use and the tumult of London history. Take the time for a guided tour, as the guides have a great deal of knowledge to impart to visitors. If you want a view into London’s remote past, you need to visit The Charterhouse.

The Guildhall

Still the official residence of the Mayor of London, the Guildhall is a magnificent piece of architecture and, arguably, even more stunning on the inside.

The outside of the building is a classic example of the Gothic Revival style that Londoners were so keen on a few hundred years ago, with dramatic corner towers and fluted stonework. Inside, the Guildhall is full of beautifully carved stone, lush carpets and dramatic chandeliers – just as you might expect for the Mayor of one of the biggest cities in the world. On foot, it won’t take you more than 15-minutes to reach the Guildhall from Montcalm Hotel Shoreditch, so there’s no reason not to make the short trek.

The place has a feeling of prestige and history, with many famous names moving through its halls over the years. If you love history and have a taste for dramatic, breath-taking architecture, check it out.

St Paul’s Cathedral

One of the benefits of staying in one of our hotels near Finsbury Square is that you are only a stone’s throw away from the fantastic St Paul’s Cathedral.

Designed and built by Sir Christopher Wren after the Great Fire of London, St Paul’s is the second biggest cathedral in England – after Liverpool – and a history lover’s paradise. Perhaps the most famous cathedral on the planet, St Paul’s is overflowing with history and, just on looks alone, more than worth a visit.

If you want to delve deeper, then guided tours are available six days a week – excluding Sunday, of course – and the helpful, very knowledgeable guides know everything there is to know about this beautiful spot.
