If you’re feeling spoilt for choice and unable to pick just one show to see, keep reading. Here are some of this year’s top rated productions.
Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead
The Old Vic
This Tony Award-winning show is celebrating its fiftieth anniversary with a revival at the Old Vic Theatre. Starring Harry Potter’s Daniel Radcliffe, the play follows two characters from Shakespeare's Hamlet and explores the tragedy from another point of view. Follow the arguably useless duo, laugh along with their mishaps and look out for cameo appearances from some other Hamlet favourites.
An American In Paris
This new musical has recently opened at the Dominion Theatre after receiving much acclaim on Broadway in the USA. It’s already proving itself to be an instant hit with UK audiences so it’s well worth booking your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. Directed and choreographed by Christopher Wheeldon of The Royal Ballet, the show takes elements of classical ballet and teams them with dancing, a delightful score, beautiful costumes and an impressive set to create a thoroughly enjoyable production. One not to be missed!
Victoria Palace Theatre
This decade’s breakout show will hit the West End in October 2017 after winning no less than 11 Tony Awards for its Broadway run. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-hop musical has broken a whole host of records Stateside and it has quickly made its name as one of the must-see shows of the last few years. Hamilton combines hip-hop, R&B and rap with traditional musical numbers to tell the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s founding fathers. This musical has already found worldwide fame through the soundtrack alone, and now UK audiences will get to experience Hamilton in all its glory. Book early to avoid disappointment as we predict a sell-out.
The Play That Goes Wrong
After exceeding expectations and gaining popularity with audiences when it was shown around London and on tour, The Play That Goes Wrong has now moved to the Duchess Theatre. With slapstick comedy, laugh out loud moments and characters you can’t help but love it isn’t hard to see why this show has become such a surprise hit. The story follows a drama group who are doing everything they can to put on a successful production of a 1920s murder mystery. As the title suggests though, just about everything goes wrong.
If none of these have piqued your fancy, there are literally dozens of other performances taking place in London’s Theatre District every night. Try our best shows to see on stage in London review for March for other top suggestions.
